Praised for his versatility, technical clarity, and keen musical insight, Tito Muñoz is an internationally recognized conductor renowned for his exceptional skills on the podium. After a decade-long tenure as the Virginia G. Piper Music Director of The Phoenix Symphony, one of the longest in the organization’s history, Tito concluded his role at the end of the 2023-24 season. His impactful leadership during this period earned him continued involvement with The Phoenix Symphony as their newly appointed Artistic Partner.
Before his time in Phoenix, Tito served as Music Director of the Opéra National de Lorraine and the Orchestre symphonique et lyrique de Nancy in France. He also held Assistant Conductor positions with the Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, and the Aspen Music Festival, further establishing his credentials in the classical music world.
Tito’s conducting career spans numerous prestigious North American and international orchestras. Notable appearances include the Atlanta, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minnesota, New York, and Utah orchestras, as well as the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. He made a notable Carnegie Hall debut with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in a sold-out performance of Orff’s Carmina Burana in February 2024. His international engagements include performances with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic (London), Sydney Symphony, and many others. In the 2024/25 season, Tito will debut with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra of the Music Makers in Singapore.
As a proponet of contemporary music, Tito champions modern composers through expanded programming, commissions, and premieres. He has conducted significant premieres by Christopher Cerrone, Kenneth Fuchs, Dai Fujikura, Michael Hersch, Adam Schoenberg, and Mauricio Sotelo. His commitment to Michael Hersch’s music is evident in the world premieres of several works, including On the Threshold of Winter, Violin Concerto, and The Script of Storms. In the 2024/25 season, Tito will conduct the world premiere of Hersch’s new opera And We, Each.
A passionate educator, Tito frequently engages with North America’s top educational institutions and summer music festivals. He has led performances at prestigious venues such as the Aspen Music Festival, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Cleveland Institute of Music, and the New England Conservatory, among others. Born in Queens, New York, Tito began his musical training as a violinist before studying conducting at the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, where he received the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize and the Aspen Conducting Prize. He made his professional conducting debut in 2006 with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center and was also a prizewinner in the 2010 Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition in Frankfurt.
